ask me why I care so much about sports. Why I care about sweaty men (or women) pummeling each other just so they can call themselves the world champion. (For only one year mind you.)
It’s not like it can be answered in a tweet or anything. Sports is another world to me. The throws. The buzzer beaters. The 2 set comeback. The fateful shootout, or the one millisecond that can make a difference. Sports lets me escape into another place where I can actually feel knowledgeable about something.
Rooting for my favorite team or player means a lot to me. It feels like I’m connected on another level with them.
Tom Brady and Roger Federer have been my two idols for as long as I can remember.
They came from a background which wasn’t entirely bad but which wasn’t entirely groomed to make them the superstars they are today.
Especially for Tom, I really look up to him because I feel he has the same competitive drive that I do. I love that aspect so much about him. I feel depressed when he loses because why would you want to see your idol sad or depressed?
It’s not because I bet on sports, it’s not because I feel that they can live my dreams or be what I wanted to be. It’s because I love what sports is at its essence.
Today was a pretty hard day for me (Boston and New York fans aren’t known for humility) and I will never deny it. But if anything Tom became my role model because he showed me that adversity can be overcome.
